Whether it is your home or your business, there will be a lot of underground services running into it – water, electricity, telecoms, fibreoptics, possibly gas, and more, and there will also be sewage pipes and wastewater leaving it. All right, some telecoms still use old-fashioned telegraph poles, but most are underground. All this is fine and keeps our green and pleasant land just that – green and pleasant.

This is all well and good but can lead to some difficult problems when something goes wrong, needs repairing, or updating, because then it is necessary to dig down to deal with whatever the issue is. Part of the problem is that if you are, say, a water engineer who needs to fix a burst pipe, how do you know what else is running alongside it, underneath it, over the top of it, and so on? It is so easy to strike and damage something else if you don’t know it is there.

Take All Possible Precautions

This is why it is essential to undertake all possible precautions before ever beginning to dig – anywhere. It is estimated by the Institute of Civil Engineers that there are some 1.5 million kilometres of underground services in the UK, and that is only an estimate. Nobody knows for sure. What that means is that underground services can literally be anywhere.

Quite obviously, one needs to obtain any plans that are available from the local utility suppliers in the area, but you can never fully rely on them. They can be out of date, inaccurate, and in many cases unavailable anyway. But they can provide some sort of a guide.

Having done that, the next thing to do is to undertake an on-site survey using the latest tools that are available – the CAT and Genny, and other tools such as the Mala Radiodetection RD8100.

These tools are extremely sophisticated and so if you are going to use them you need to take a CAT course that we provide at Sygma Solutions. Our CAT course covers everything that you need to know about using the CAT and Genny for an underground survey, including the fact that they do have certain limitations, as it is vital to know what these are.

We also provide Radiodetection training for the Mala RD8100. This is another very useful tool, but as with the others, you need Radiodetection training in order to fully understand and appreciate how everything functions before you can be confident when carrying out a survey in real life.
