One of the most vital things to do before carrying out any sort of digging work on any type of project is to undertake a thorough survey of the site in order to ascertain what, if any, utilities are buried below the surface of the ground, and if so, what they are, and how deep they are.

It is essential to take every possible step in order to avoid striking and damaging underground services for several reasons. Not the least of these is the damage to the service and the potential effects on users of that service. However, even more important is the danger to workers doing the digging. Strike an 11,000-volt electricity cable and that can very easily be fatal. Indeed, in an average year there are some dozen or so fatalities as a result of striking underground services. There are considerably more injuries on top of that.

HSG47

HSG47 is the guidebook provided by the HSE which explains what to do before beginning digging. At Sygma Solutions we provide HSG47 training in the use of the CAT and Genny, which are the tools mostly used for locating and identifying underground services. Used on its’ own, the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) can locate certain services but is far better used in conjunction with the signal generator (Genny). Indeed, we believe that the two should always be used together.

Our training covers every aspect of the use of the CAT and Genny in all their modes. It will also enable operatives to obtain qualifications that will allow them to work on sites such as Heathrow Airport and HS2. Indeed, more and more projects are requiring operatives who are engaged in the detection of underground services to have such qualifications before being allowed to conduct these surveys.

Apart from the obvious dangers of striking electricity cables or gas pipes, there are other services which can cause serious injury. Water pipes are less likely to cause injuries, but water under pressure can be severe enough to do so. In addition to that, water that is leaking from a pipe may cause the ground structure to weaken, resulting in damage to other services running alongside or nearby. There are also fluids that can be flammable and may be toxic as well.

All of these possibilities and training in the way to handle them are part of our HSG47 training in cable avoidance which is comprehensive and covers every possible detail.
