If you are someone who enjoys gardening as, according to research, some 27 million, or 42% of the adult population does, then you can see that you are in good company. Many of us love to produce our own fresh food on a veg plot or allotment, and also enjoy the almost unlimited choice of flowers and plants and trees that we can tend.

Of course, gardening involves a lot of digging, but there is a big difference between digging down a foot to make a trench in which to plant runner beans or leeks and digging to produce the foundations for a house or even a 30-storey building. As a gardener you are not likely to strike any underground services, but as a building contractor it is very likely that you could.

All of which is why, when digging to any depth, you need to be sure that you are not going to hit an electricity cable, gas pipe, water pipe, and so on, and the only way that you can find out what, if anything, is there is by undertaking a thorough survey of the land before commencing any work.

Fortunately, the Health and Safety Executive has produced HSG47, which could be thought of as the Holy Bible of how to undertake surveys and ascertain what underground services there are and where they run.

Services Can Be Anywhere

Underground services can be literally anywhere, including the most unlikely places, so a thorough survey is essential – even if you are in the middle of a forest in the Lake District. You also need to have training in the use of the CAT and Genny which are the two main tools that are used to locate and identify services.

This is why the HSG47 course that we provide at Sygma Solutions is an essential step in learning everything that there is to know about the location of such services. Our courses cover everything and will also enable operatives to obtain qualifications that are essential for surveyors more and more today. Quite simply, many contractors who need surveys undertaken, such as HS2 and Heathrow Airport to name but two, are making these qualifications a requirement before they will even let you on their land.

Our HSG47 course begins in the classroom (although this can also be done online) in order to understand all of the various possible situations and the use of the tools, and this is then followed up with practical work onsite so that participants will finish with a complete understanding of all the situations that can arise, and how to interpret them.
