When you plug your mobile phone into the socket on the wall to recharge it, switch on your air fryer, or fire up your laptop, everything works absolutely perfectly. What we never think about is what is happening. Sure, it’s electricity, but so what?
You can’t connect to the electricity without it first being produced and then supplied to your property by miles and miles of cables. In this case, it has been estimated to be anywhere between 1.5 million and 2.5 million miles of them – all of which run under the ground to get to your home and those of everyone else in the UK.
What that means is that electricity cables are everywhere. So are sewage pipes, water pipes, a lot of gas pipes (although not everyone has a gas connection), and several other types of services. All of which lie hidden away where you can’t see them.
That’s fine. Imagine what it would be like if you had electricity pylons all over your town, and a whole lot of other pylons carrying pipes for water, sewage, etc. Not nice at all.
So, it’s great that everything is hidden away.
Until something goes wrong! As in the water pipes leaking for instance. Or you switch on a light and there’s no electricity. Something has gone wrong.
But where? This is where everything becomes extremely complicated for contractors who need to carry out repairs. Not only have they got to locate the service in order to repair it, but when they start digging down they also have to make certain that they don’t damage any other service that may be running alongside, underneath, or above it. Cable avoidance is essential.
In order to locate and identify all of these services, we use the CAT and Genny – Cable Avoidance Tool and Signal Generator. But people need CAT training in order to fully understand how to use them. Buying them and reading the instructions is nowhere near enough.
