Cable avoidance is an all-embracing term for the work required to avoid striking / damaging any sort of underground service, of which there are many. There are some 4 million ground excavations every year in the UK, leading to around 60,000 cable strikes. This may seem a small percentage, but the fact is that a large number of them cause injury to workers, and in some cases – around a dozen every year – are fatal.

This is why it is essential to carry out a full underground survey before commencing an excavation in order to establish what, if any, services are on the site, what they are, and where they run. This then enables contractors to undertake excavations with confidence. Without such knowledge, cable strikes are likely to happen. Believe it or not, some contractors do actually carry out excavations without undertaking a survey first.

Carrying out an underground survey requires expertise and specialist knowledge, and this is what we provide with our training courses at Sygma Solutions. We are regarded as the foremost provider of such training in the UK, with our team having a combined experience of over 100 years. Our cable avoidance classes begin with learning in the classroom, and this can be provided at our headquarters in Wigan or at your own premises if you prefer. Since the advent of Covid, we now also provide classroom training online as well, so you can choose whatever is right for your particular situation.

Real Life Circumstances

Once the classroom learning has been covered, it is then time to get out on site and practice in real life circumstances, using the tools that are required, including the CAT and Genny, and GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar. As sophisticated as these tools are, there are still situations where they can give a false reading or are unable to provide a reading if, say, there is a mass of cables in a particular site. It is essential that operatives know how to deal with these situations and avoid striking any underground services.

So, for example, one might have a negative reading because a service is below the depth at which the equipment can read. In this case it may be correct to begin to dig very carefully down to a foot or so and then take another reading which might then show the service if there is one there. All of these types of situations are covered in our training. You could say that we leave no stone unturned!
