These can be absolutely anywhere – even in the middle of a field, where you would never expect to find them. But that field could just be the shortest route between two villages out in the wilds, which is why a particular utility chose that route.
Of course, in towns and cities we know full well that there are going to be utilities of almost every sort, although some areas do not have gas. But there can be pretty much anything else, and not only that but they can run alongside each other, above, or underneath. Or there may be just an electricity cable running down under the pavement, while the telecoms could be in the road along with the water and sewage pipes, connected to each building by a section at right angles. Even then, we don’t know exactly where each of those pipes or cables is.
It is therefore necessary to locate and identify precisely where each of these pipes and cables run so that contractors do not hit them when they commence to dig. Even if you are working for, say, the local electricity supplier and have been given the plans, or STATS, you cannot necessarily rely on them. They may be out of date, they may be inaccurate, or they may no longer exist. They can only ever be used as a guide.
So, it is necessary to use tools such as the CAT and Genny in order to locate and identify the services in order to avoid striking them. However, underground surveyors who are going to carry out such surveys need to have training in the use of the tools which, while very sophisticated, do have certain limitations.
