In any excavation project, whether it’s for construction, utilities maintenance, or landscaping, striking underground services is a significant risk that must not be underestimated. The consequences of such incidents can range from costly repairs and project delays to severe injuries and fatalities. At Sygma Solutions, we understand the critical importance of prioritising safety in all digging operations.

Striking underground services like gas pipelines, water mains, electrical cables, or telecommunication lines can have catastrophic consequences. Severing these utilities can cause gas leaks, flooding, power outages, and communication disruptions. Additionally, it poses a severe threat to the safety of workers and the public. Even seemingly minor damage to these services can lead to substantial financial liabilities and even legal consequences for the parties involved.

HSG47 refers to the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) “Avoiding Danger from Underground Services” guidelines. These guidelines provide essential safety information for anyone involved in excavation work. HSG47 Training equips workers with the knowledge and understanding of best practices, risk assessments, and safe digging techniques to prevent incidents related to striking underground services.

By undertaking the training that we provide, operatives gain valuable insights into recognising the potential hazards, understanding the different types of underground services, and implementing effective safety measures. They will learn to interpret utility plans and use various locating devices to identify the precise location of buried services before commencing excavation. This pro-active approach significantly reduces the likelihood of striking underground services and fosters a safety-first culture.

The Role Of The CAT & Genny

CAT & Genny refers to the common industry term for the Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny). These tools are crucial components of modern utility locating equipment. The CAT detects electromagnetic signals emitted by metallic services, while the Genny is used to introduce a signal into non-metallic services, making them locatable by the CAT. When used together, the CAT & Genny enable workers to accurately identify the presence and location of buried services.

Employing the CAT & Genny during excavation activities adds an extra layer of protection, complementing the information obtained from utility plans and site surveys. By using these tools, operatives can confirm the location of underground services, increasing their confidence in the safety of the excavation process.

Striking underground services during digging operations poses significant dangers to both workers and the public. The potential consequences of such incidents highlight the critical need for comprehensive safety measures. At Sygma Solutions, we recognise the paramount importance of HSG47 Training and the use of CAT & Genny in ensuring safe and responsible excavation practices.
