At Sygma Solutions we sometimes find ourselves asked what it is that we do for a living – perhaps by new friends, people we meet at a party, and so on – and when we reply that we provide CAT and Genny training, we can get some very strange looks!

“What the heck is that?” is often the response, and on one occasion a wag said that he didn’t know that you could train cats! (If you have ever kept a cat, you will know that it is true: cats do what they want).

For those still puzzled, we train operatives who need to survey a construction site in order to find out what lies underground – water pipes, electricity, telecoms, gas pipes, sewage pipes, and a whole lot more – how to do this and how to use the various high-tech tools that can help in the search, which includes the Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny).

These tools today are highly sophisticated and can produce a considerable amount of information about what lies underground on a construction site, where the various services run, how deep down they are, and so on. As such, they are not something that you can just buy off the shelf and simply read the instructions.

The Same As Learning To Drive

There is a lot more to it than that. It is much the same as learning to drive. You can read the handbook that comes with the car, but you can’t just jump in and start driving.

Our CAT And Genny training courses teach you everything that you need to know before you can start using the tools successfully and with the confidence that you need to be sure that you have got it right. After all, digging almost anywhere these days can mean that you strike an underground service if you don’t now what is there and how to handle it.

Even then, as sophisticated as the CAT and Genny are, they are not superhuman. For instance, if there are a lot of electricity cables in an area, they can give off confusing signals, and it is necessary to understand how to interpret them and deal with this. Then there are other situations where a service may be too deep for the CAT to locate it, or in the case of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar, which is another tool), the type of ground itself can cause issues.

We provide training which deals with all of these situations including what to do when there may be some doubt about a specific issue.
