Almost all construction projects these days commence with excavation of one sort or another. When constructing any building other than a garden shed, it is necessary to have firm foundations, and that means digging.

However, construction companies are also required to undertake every possible step in order to prevent injury to workers or the general public – which in some instances can be fatal – and this means that we now have requirements of workers and their employers to have knowledge of how to avoid striking underground services when digging, and the various dangers that maybe present. Gone are the days when anyone straight out of school could get a job just by applying and knowing how to use a fork and shovel.

Indeed, there are now qualifications in things in the construction industry that more and more businesses are requiring before it is possible to work on their sites. Two major projects which spring to mind are HS2 and construction work on Heathrow Airport.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme

For example, there is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) which requires operatives to achieve certain standards before they can obtain a CSCS card that will enable them to work on many sites.

You may want to embark on a career as an underground utility surveyor, so you will need to know how to locate and identify underground services, and how to use the various tools that are used in the process. These include the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) which is used alone to identify metallic pipes underground. In most cases it should also be used in conjunction with the Genny (Signal Generator) so that the surveyor can also locate non-metallic objects. There is also GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) which has many uses.

At Sygma Solutions we provide CAT training courses and training in the use of the Genny, along with the use of GPR tools as well. So, when you have attended such courses and achieved the necessary standard, you can then apply for a CSCS Utility Surveyor Card which will open up many more possibilities for your career. Indeed, as we said, a CSCS Utility Surveyor Card is a requirement for being able to work on more and more projects.

Our CAT training courses are designed so that not only do operatives understand how to use the tools themselves, but also their limitations. And they do, indeed, have certain limitations in some situations. It is essential to understand what these are in order to avoid making what could be extremely costly, and even tragic mistakes.
