One of the best known producers of underground utility location tools is Mala, and at Sygma Solutions we are honoured to have been chosen to be the sole UK supplier of their products. This includes the RD8100 which uses electro magnetic principles, and the Mala Easy Locator series which works by GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar.

The RD8100 can locate underground services such as electricity cables, metal pipes, and so on, using three methods of operation. Our RD8100 training covers everything that the tool can do.

The first is the passive method, and this works when an electric cable has electricity passing through it and emits a power or radio signal which can be traced at the ground surface. The signal needs to be strong enough to be located at the surface. However, if there is no power passing through the cable, it will not produce any signal.

It is important to understand this, because this does not mean that the cable is not live, but just not at that time. For instance, streetlights will receive no power during daylight, but will when switched on, as it gets dark. However, it is also possible in some cases for a live cable to emit no signal. Some HV cables are designed to emit no signal, whether live or not. Our RD8100 training covers this in detail.

If no signal is detected, the cable can then be traced by using the Genny – signal generator – which is placed on the ground surface and emits a signal into the ground. The idea is that this signal will “attach” itself to the service and then travel along its’ length which enables the RD8100 to follow the route of the cable on the surface. This is called the “induction” method.

Direct Connection

If neither of the above methods works, then the only other possibility is to attach the RD8100 directly to the service using a clamp. This obviously requires there to be a direct access to the service using a stop valve, cable riser, inspection chamber, and so on. Sometimes, such a point may be inaccessible because it is behind gates or doors which are locked. Our cable location training covers these situations as well.

If all of these methods have been tried without success, then the next step is to use the Mala Easy Locator GPR. This does not physically locate buried services but can spot changes in ground density where cables may run. Operatives attending our cable location training courses will receive detailed coverage of how this works as well.
