Just about every building contract starts with digging into the ground in order to construct foundations and install services – water, electricity, telecoms, sewage, gas, and so on – and it is vital to avoid striking any existing services. They can be anywhere. So, it is essential to know, as far as is humanly possible, what they are and where they are.
Locating and identifying underground services is a science in itself and requires the use of certain tools such as the CAT and Genny, and GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar.
One of the latest pieces of equipment is the Mala RadioDetection 8100 series. We are the sole UK agent for Mala, and among other things, we can provide RadioDetection rd8100 training in the use of the tool.
The RD8100 is the most advanced locator which delivers high performance combined with quality and durability. It has five precision ground antennae which allow the operator to select the most appropriate level of precision for the job. The tool has power filters which can be used to pinpoint and discriminate between power cables. Very often there are complex networks which make it difficult to trace individual power lines, but the RD8100 now lets you press a single key to establish if a signal comes from one source, or from multiple cables, then trace and mark their routes. We show you how to do this on our RadioDetection rd8100 training course.
You can also customise the locator by programming up to 5 additional frequencies to match it to the signals found on your target networks. You can also add an accessory A-frame to identify and pinpoint insulation sheath faults to within 4″. That can save an awful lot of digging! With GPS equipped RD8100 locators, the receiver can automatically log locate parameters every second which can provide a comprehensive picture of a locate, and can also assess usage patterns over a year or more.
The RD8100 has many other functions which you will learn about on the training courses that we provide.
Our courses can also lead to a qualification in cable avoidance. So, for instance we provide PAS128 utility mapping / surveyor training and QCF Level 2 utility location and avoidance. You can progress to a QCF Level 3 Utility Surveyor. This will entitle you to a CSCS Gold Card. It will also entitle you to undertake work on sites such as Heathrow Airport and any HS2 contract, among others. In fact, more and more businesses are making these qualifications mandatory to work on their sites. Obviously, with the appropriate qualification in cable avoidance, you can go on to greater things and earn better money.
