It is probably fair to say that more than 90% of homeowners who have a garden never give a passing thought to what lies under their lawns or their flower beds, and yet there are things such as electricity cables, sewage pipes, water pipes, gas pipes, and so on that provide the necessary services into their homes.

Most of the time, they will get away without causing any damage to those services because they probably won’t dig down very deeply, only planting vegetables, shrubs, or perhaps a small tree. However, it is still worth noting that just digging a hole for fence posts could strike something, so if they are going to do that, or perhaps build a garage, then they should take it into consideration and endeavour to find out what is there.

In the commercial sector, things are, of course, very different. Just about every construction contract begins with digging in order to lay foundations for a building, and in some cases the digging / excavations can be very deep if, for example, constructing a building with an underground car park or perhaps cellars for storage.

Vital

In all these cases, it is absolutely vital to find out what services are under the ground and where they run.

The first port of call should be the local authority and utility providers in order to establish what plans they have. However, while these are sometimes very good and up to date, in other cases they can be not just out of date but wrong as well. In addition, in some instances, there may simply be no plans available at all.

Furthermore, even if plans are available, you most certainly cannot rely on them. They may be correct, but would you want to risk your life on that? We think not.

So, it is essential to undertake a thorough survey of the site using the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) in order to establish what runs where. These tools are very advanced these days, and can provide the answers you need, but it is also necessary to undertake cable avoidance training learn how to use the in all their modes.

At Sygma Solutions we are recognised as the foremost providers of cable avoidance training in the UK, with our team having a combined experience of over 100 years in the location of underground services. We provide both classroom lessons (offline or online) and practical onsite training either at our premises or yours.
