Most people who have a home with a back garden, and perhaps a front garden as well, don’t give a moment’s thought when it comes to digging in their veg plot, or uprooting a shrub to replace it with something else. They just go ahead and get on with it. In most cases, that is fine, but there can always be an issue about striking utilities, nearly all of which run underground.

For instance, let’s suppose that you want to replace the fence along the front of your garden, or for that matter the rear. So, you need to dig some holes in order to put new fence poles in. Here’s the thing: do you know where the electricity cable and the water pipe that brings those services into your home really is? What about your telephone cable? If you don’t (and you don’t, do you?) there is always the chance of a cable strike when digging.

All right, the likelihood is that they will run somewhat deeper than you need to dig to plant some fence posts, but they could be not very much further down. It is something that does bear thinking about because those utilities all have to run into your home somewhere.

It is not just homeowners who need to dig from time to time. All of the utilities themselves frequently need to dig in order to repair services, install new ones, take out old ones, and so on. It is estimated that there are around 4,000,000 excavations of this sort across the UK every year.

Conducting A Survey Is Essential

Utilities often have to dig a lot deeper than you would to plant a shrub, and so it is essential that they carry out a survey before starting in order to ascertain what other services are running alongside, above, or underneath their own, as a cable strike can wreak havoc and can result in serious injury to workers.

This is why it is vital to carry out a thorough underground survey using the CAT and Genny in order to locate such services and avoid them. At Sygma Solutions we provide a CAT and Genny course for operatives who need to locate them, because there is a lot to learn about how you can avoid them.

Our CAT And Genny course goes into great detail about the operation of these tools and, critically, also explains what limitations they may have and how to deal with such situations when they arise.
