Any sort of construction project which involves digging – which is the vast majority of construction projects – requires a considerable amount of planning before commencing work. Let’s face it, when you are constructing a building, the first thing that you need to do is to create the foundations. Certainly, some projects are concerned with restoring a building or changing it around for a new purpose, but any new build project is going to involve digging as the first stage of the work.

There is also the question of laying drains, water pipes, sewage pipes, telecoms, electricity cables, possibly gas pipes, and more, all of which require excavation work.

The very first thing to do in any sort of construction project is to plan the work. The next is to locate and identify any and all buried services on the site, and then it is necessary to carry out the excavation work safely. Obviously, planning the construction will be carried out by architects, but the next job is to obtain STATS (plans) from all of the utilities in the area.

However, STATS must never be relied upon, for many reasons. They are very often out of date. They can be incorrect. Different utilities record them in different ways. Over the years, they have been changed from drawings to microfiche to computers. Then they may not even exist at all. The point of STATS is that they can be used as a guide and as a starting point, but you can never rely on them as gospel.

A Site Survey

So, the next thing to do is to carry out a site survey in order to locate and identify any and all underground services. The two main tools used for this are the CAT and Genny, CAT being an abbreviation for Cable Avoidance Tool, and Genny being Signal Generator. In most situations, the CAT and Genny should be used in combination.

However, you cannot just buy one of each of these and simply read the instructions. That would be like buying a car when you have never driven before, jumping into the driver’s seat, and off you go! You probably wouldn’t get past the first corner!

So, you need CAT and Genny training in just the same way as you need a driving instructor. At Sygma Solutions we are recognised as a foremost CAT and Genny training provider in the UK. Our courses are approved by the CITB, CSCS, EUSR, and The Survey Association.

Our courses begin in the classroom, and today this can either be physically in a classroom or it can be online. Our online courses are run in much the same way as in a physical classroom in that they are interactive, and attendees can ask questions and get answers from the instructor as they would in a classroom.

We then undertake on-site training so that operatives can put the knowledge that they have gained in the classroom to work out in the field in real, live situations.
