Health and safety regulations are in place to ensure you are protected. These regulations are specifically impertinent for those whose jobs involve working around utilities. In this blog, we answer some of the important questions about HSG47.

What is HSG47?

It is a set of guidelines outlining the potential risks and dangers of working close to underground services, such as cable lines, gas pipes, etc. The guidance offers safety recommendations and advice on how to decrease the risks to health and safety. Supervisors and workers must abide by the safety regulations to create a safe working environment.

Sygma Solutions Ltd. offers EUSR HSG47 training and the course covers all the details set in the HSG47 for safe working conditions.

Who must know about HSG47?

Individuals involved in planning, commissioning, managing or executing work on or near underground services must be aware of this guidance. Additionally, the operators and owners of these services must familiarise themselves with this guidance.

The guidance is relevant to all kinds of work involving areas where underground services or utilities might be found and damaged. HSG47 covers everything from excavation and road works to site investigation surveys and demolition.

Since underground services are widespread and never in a straight line, you must assume they are present unless you have evidence to prove otherwise.

Are there any dangers of non-compliance?

Working around or with underground utilities means assuming the risk of damaging them. If underground services are damaged, it can result in severe injuries and may even be fatal. Furthermore, it causes environmental change and disruption, delaying the project and making the company incur significant costs.

The costs are not only from project delays, but in the event of an accident, the company might be required to pay a hefty amount in compensation.

What are the aspects covered in HSG47?

The different aspects covered in the guideline are:

  • The identification and management of dangers – EUSR HSG47 training focuses on teaching the participants the identification of the risks of working around or with underground utilities and equips them with the knowledge and tools to manage the dangers.
  • Planning the work – The guideline states that workers must have drawings of the underground services from utilities companies and other organisations. The site must be surveyed before any digging or excavating happens.
  • Locating and marketing the utilities – The specific areas where underground services are buried must be marked and their location must be recorded.
  • Safe excavation – Safe excavation techniques must be carried out, which avoids damaging the underground services.
