It cannot be stressed enough that any contractor undertaking any sort of groundwork must take every precaution regarding the location and avoidance of underground utilities. Apart from the damage to the utilities, the corresponding delay in continuing the work, the loss of income to the contractor, and the damage to its’ reputation, the main consideration is that a cable strike can be downright dangerous to the worker.
For example, a very well-known contractor was fined £600,000 last year after an employee of its’ sub-contractor struck an 11,000 volt cable and suffered burns. He has not been able to return to work.
The irony is that the main contractor had employed a cable avoidance specialist who had accurately located the very cable that the employee cut through, but failed to pass his findings on to the sub-contractor!
The fact is that cable strikes occur every day up and down the country and they are often the result of operatives with inadequate knowledge failing to locate an underground utility. The equipment that we have available today is very good, although some types do have certain limitations. What is lacking is training of the type provided by Sygma Solutions which focuses on the genny or signal transmitter and its use.

We partner with Mala in the use of their Easy Locator Ground Penetrating radar (GPR) and Easy Locator HDR range. The HDR (High Dynamic Range) locator is faster and easier to use and delivers cleaner data with up to 20% more penetration depth than other systems. The Mala HDR uses ground-penetrating radar and can locate non-metallic utilities which are becoming ever more common.
