At Sygma Solutions our mission is to teach operatives everything – and we mean EVERYTHING – that they need to know about cable avoidance when undertaking any kind of excavation work, and about the cable avoidance tools that are used. This includes their limitations, and they do have certain limitations. If you are not aware of them, it can lead to drawing the wrong conclusions about the location of underground services.

For example, when using the CAT and Genny – especially the latest models – you will be able to locate the depth of buried services. Or will you?

You could very easily get a reading which shows that the area that you are about to excavate has no buried services in it. Yet it could have. There is a limit to how deeply a service may be located, so when you search for it at ground level, which you obviously do, to begin with, you may get a negative result. This could lead an operative to believe that there are no services there and start to dig immediately.

The trick with this is to dig down carefully for about a foot – all excavation should be undertaken cautiously – and then REPEAT the search. You might now find that although you got a negative reading on the surface of the ground there is actually a service, or services running there. If you don’t check after each foot or so that you dig down, you could have a cable strike that could cause injury, or in some cases could be fatal. After all, there are at least 1.5 million kilometers of underground services in the UK, so they can be anywhere.

They can even be out in a field full of sheep which is probably the last place you would expect to find them, but it may be that this is simply the shortest route between two villages so that is where the utility company laid them.
You should never put implicit trust in the utility companies’ plans, or STATS, either. By all means, check them out, but don’t rely on them. Only use them as a guide, because many STATS are not accurate.

These are just a couple of the reasons why the courses that we run at Sygma Solutions go into so much more depth than many other courses that we have seen. We want your operatives to be safe at all times which is why we go to every length to ensure that nothing is left out.
