It is a fact that there are far too many cable strikes by operatives engaged in groundwork throughout the UK. One cable strike is one too many, but according to one widely reported set of figures there are approximately 4 million excavations in the UK every year resulting in some 60,000 cable strikes! To be fair, the source of the figures is unknown, but it is not thought to include all works or annual variations.

According to Zurich Insurance figures from 2014 there are some 600 serious injuries and 12 deaths on average every year from cable strikes. A large number of these are a result of cables not being located before groundworks commence, but at least one major company was fined a considerable amount for serious injury sustained by one of its’ subcontractors employees a year or so ago when the company had actually carried out surveillance work. The employee hit the very 11,000 volt cable that the surveillance had noted, but the company had failed to pass on the information to the subcontractor!

Notwithstanding that sort of carelessness, there are still far too many cable strikes because operatives do not fully understand how to locate them. This is why the CATSCAN training from Sygma Solutions is such a vital weapon in the war against accidents caused by utility strikes. Not only do cable strikes cause serious injuries and deaths, but they also impinge seriously on the contractor concerned. There is immediate downtime, and the cost of repairs can run into thousands. Furthermore, a serious cable strike can cause lasting damage to the reputation of a contractor, resulting in a considerable loss of future contracts.

This is why underground utility strike training is essential for all contractors whose operatives are involved in groundwork, which is the majority of them. Certainly, if you are involved in brickwork, painting and decorating, carpentry, and a few other skills, you may not need to do any digging. However, very many contractors do, and it is critical that their operatives have the skills to locate and avoid underground utilities.

The CATSCAN course provided by Sygma Solutions is like no other in the depth to which it goes. We believe firmly in the use of the Genny and we teach operatives how to use all of its’ capabilities and not just some of them. Furthermore, we also train operatives in the limitations of the tool so that they are aware that in some instances a negative result does not mean that there is no cable there.
