Cable strikes are running at about an average of 60,000 every year in the UK as a result of contractors digging without knowledge of underground utilities. That is an average of 165 every single day of the year and, at best, results in a delay on the contract while the utility sends workers to resolve the problem. A cable strike can also result in minor injury, serious injury, and in a handful of cases, fatalities.
Just a delay in carrying out work on the contract can cost the contractor the wages of men who are standing about idle until the problem is resolved. However, it can cost considerably more if the main contractor decides to withhold payments because of the delays. It can cost even more if businesses in the area that are affected claim for loss of income – and all because the contractor simply was not aware of the buried utilities.
This is why cable avoidance training is critical for any contractor anywhere who is about to dig a hole in the ground. It doesn’t even matter if the hole that is going to be dug is in the middle of a field full of sheep – there can still be underground utilities there simply because it is the shortest distance from one village to the next, which is why the utility company chose that route in the first place.
Sygma Solutions provides CAT and Genny training for operatives of any company engaged in construction work which involves digging into the ground. They begin with the reasons for using buried pipe and cable locators and an understanding of the health and safety implications, including information on how to comply with HSG47. Operatives will also learn how to understand STATS (buried service plans) and learn that they can sometimes be wildly inaccurate and cannot be relied upon by themselves. At other times, they are simply not available at all.
Course attendees are taught electromagnetic theory and the correct use of the CAT 4 and Genny 4 in all modes, at the same time having an understanding of their limitations and what they can and cannot locate. Following work in the classroom, operatives are taken out on-site and will carry out practical work in the correct use of the equipment in real-life situations.
